I found this URL rather complete and quite acurrate. The only thing outdated may be is the NFS swap patch, use one from Linux Mamma is more more up to date. Also the bootmenu could be replaced with MGL. http://sunflower.singnet.com.sg/~leetc/howto/workstation.html I think you have put the newly compiled kernel on test/trail, to make sure it really work. May be you have an incomplete root file system, but usually there are error messages which point to the problems.
