Traditional tars don't handle special devices, but I think GNU tar does.
That's why I suggested cpio.

You could always create the devices by hand using mknod.

Better yet, I used NFS to copy a complete linux box up to a solaris
box - that works OK.  But I did have weird problems trying to do it
from the console of the linux box - it worked from the console of the solaris
box (doing the mounting and copying by mounting an NFS share from
the linux box on the solaris box).
