What patchlevel? Latest is 4.2.9.

Probably the "8139 image too large bug". See RELNOTES. Remove all
non-essential options from the 8139 build. size rtl8139.tmp must print a
total size < 32kB. If an old patchlevel may even be the "watching wrong
register bit bug".
