So long as your network card driver is compiled into the kernel, the other devices could be modules (sound,parallel,serial,etc...) Or, you can create an initial ramdisk (initrd) and append that to your kernel and it will be downloaded along with the kernel. Then, all of your drivers can be modules, including the network driver.
