The NILO project has encountered a programming problem in the implementation of NILO (http://nilo.sourceforge.net). Currently the NILO snapshot runs in protected mode. It makes a BOOTP/DHCP request and loads a file using TFTP. However it encounters problems when it tries to reenter real mode to execute the program. NLnet will pay a bounty of US$1000 and registration to the next Usenix conference to the provider of the best solution to this problem. The required solution is to modify the current snapshot of NILO so that it will load and execute a Linux kernel image using BOOTP/DHCP and TFTP. The solution must stay within the design parameters for NILO, i.e. the resulting program must use an embedded Linux or FreeBSD network adapter driver. The footprint can be larger than the design goal at this point. The solution provided must compile and execute correctly as judged by NLnet. It's up to NLnet to decide which solutions is the best. NLnet will be advised in this decission by the current cooperators on NILO. As with NILO the solution should be provided as PD (GPL). The deadline for the solution is 1st of August 2000. For information on the architecture of NILO, please visit the NILO web page.
