Re: System reboot after retrieving linux kernel

Roland,
I've had similar problems in the past, where the machine seems to
handle the handshake correctly, loads the kernel, and then panics. My
experience has been that when the kernel dies and reboots the machine,
that something is missing in your kernel. Some of the more obvious
problems might be:

-- you have scsi harddrives, but your kernel is not scsi enabled
-- trying to run a UP kernel on an SMP machine
-- you should have remote root file system option turned on in kernel
-- are you certain that you're really loading the kernel? You could
use bootptest command (part of bootp package) to check
-- do you have the ethernet adapter device driver built into your
kernel?
-- is your kernel monolithic? (no loadable modules, all options are
either y or n, not m)
-- I suspect if you have NFS problems on the server side, that you
would not be able
to mount the remote root file system, but this should not cause
the problem
you're seeing (the machine would hang instead, saying that it
can't mount root)

Please post here if any of these help...

thanks, Rich

Subject: System reboot after retrieving linux kernel

Hi

Can someone help me. I'm a bit confused.
I use Etherboot 4.6.2 to boot a diskless client. I want to boot linux on
the diskless machine. The machine uses a Davicom 9102 NIC.
When starting the diskless machine etherboot detects the correct card.
The server answers the bootp request and after that the diskless machine
starts downloading the kernel. When finished downloading the kernel the
diskless machine reboots thus the result is a loop of starting etherboot
getting kernel and rebooting.

Best regards
Roland Manfrahs
