i think i found the problem, i unpacked the etherboot src into a new directory i then did the following make make clean make first.linux is now a 0 length file. i believe i ran into an smp race condition during the build. i got lazy and aliased make to make -j2 while in the midst of building kernels. (still doesn't clarify why it chose first-dos (and occasionally first-fdos) during tags using mknbi-linux - i'll take a look at the perl script & see if notice something) thanks for your assistance!
