Steve has already said on this list (maybe a year ago?) that the 3c905C-TXM boards don't have the chip write-protected as described here. 3Com in general has been really pretty good to work with in my opinion (when I originally wrote the 3c905b driver for etherboot), and I really would feel bad about needlessly leading someone to get annoyed with them...
