The boot ROM (MBA) on the 3C905C adapter can be configured to boot via PXE, DHCP, or BOOTP protocol. The boot protocol you choose is dependent on the boot service on the Linux server. The 3C90X MBA by default will not be able to boot a kernel that was patched using the mknbi utility. You must use the attached file to patch any mknbi boot image file. Use the cat command to append this binary file to the boot image header. For example, cat imghdr linux.X >linux.img. The new image file (linux.img) can now be booted using any 3Com or Lanwork boot ROM. Note, the 3C905C uses a different device driver from the earlier 3C90X adapters. The latest Red Hat distribution will have the required driver. Also, check out the Linux Terminal Server Project (www.ltsp.org) for a cool way of remote booting Linux.
